Out There – Contemporary Contexts for Museums

OUT THERE SPEAKERS

These are the presentations that were given by our speakers at Out There. Please share, comment on and take inspiration from their thought provoking talks. We hope to continue this International ideas exchange with those interested in social engagement in museums and cultural organisations. If you have a model of working that you would like to share, please do so here.

Mark O’Neill gives a history of the Open Museum, explaining the context of Glasgow which informs and shapes our work. Mark was the Head of Glasgow Museums and is now the Director of Research and Development for Glasgow Life.

Luiz Vergara and Jessica Gogan speak about experimenting with art in community health centres in Niteroi. In the following film the participants themselves talk about what they learned throughout the process.

Michael Mel’s performance questions how museums have dealt with indigenous cultures and forces us to consider the future of our international collections.

Vera Tamari was unable to join us due to difficulties in travelling from Palestine. Noorah Al Gailani kindly presented on her behalf. Noorah speaks about Vera’s the groundbreaking work to overcome physical barriers by connecting people and collections virtually.

Rooksana Omar speaks about dealing with the past and also celebrating the future in museums in South Africa.
