Out There – Contemporary Contexts for Museums

OUT THERE EXHIBITION

On the final afternoon, we challenged delegates to get Out There and investigate the local area around our venue,  Tramway. We wanted to remind oursleves of the importance of responding to a locality, getting to know our communities and taking time to look around us. We supplied each delegate with an explorer pack to collect something from their travels; this could be an object, story or thought from their walk, or they could create something or reflect on the two days.

We also wanted to explore the idea of gift and exchange. In some cultures there are gifting communities; when one person receives a gift they do not give something in return, they pass it on to a third party. The idea is that the gift should keep moving.

We created a gifting community with the delegates by asking them to collect their thought or object as a gift for someone else. They would not know who their gift would be sent to but each recipient would have the option to contact their gifter. We wanted to create unexpected connections and offer another way to keep the ideas exchange moving.

Below are the ideas, thoughts, memories and objects that were collected and shared.
