Out There – Contemporary Contexts for Museums

- ABOUT

The Open Museum, based at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, takes Glasgow’s museum collections beyond the museum walls and out into the community. We planned OUT THERE to celebrate 20 years of the Open Museum and to help us to question our working and plan for the future. We wanted to bring people together from various fields to explore the social potential of museums and galleries.

Out There was a two day gathering in Glasgow for all those committed to social justice and cultural activism. We were broad in our outlook and recognised that many people have an investment in museums and also that interesting projects happening outside of museums can inform our future work.

All participants shaped the event by their contributions on the blog, their open and honest discussions about the successes and failures of socially engaged arts and heritage practice and their enthusiasm for collaborating with others.

International speakers presented various museum models that promote new methods of community engagement.  We also had a big ideas session with short, snappy, presentations from people with something inspirational to share. These presentations will shortly be up on the blog.

OUT THERE was intended as the beginning of this ideas exchange; we aim to keep the discussions going. This blog will be a learning exchange, a chance to create new links and an opportunity to share and critique practice amongst a supportive network of critical friends.
